July 10, 2019 - The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has received applications from several prominent lawyers seeking to join the exclusive league of senior counsel in Kenya.

Among the applicants are Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Kirinyaga gubernatorial aspirant Martha Karua, who have expressed interest in joining the elite group of legal practitioners.

According to the LSK, applicants must have at least 15 years of experience as High Court judges or have made significant contributions to the legal profession through academic writings.

Other notable figures who have sent in their applications include former director of public prosecution Philip Murgor, Ambrose Rachier, ex-LSK chairperson Eric Mutua, Fred Ngatia, and Charles Kanjama.

The applicants will undergo a rigorous vetting process before a committee headed by the attorney general and one judge from the High Court and Court of Appeal.

The committee will comprise four advocates and three senior counsel members, who will evaluate the applicants' qualifications and recommend successful candidates to President Uhuru Kenyatta for conferment.

Kenya currently has 26 senior counsels, and the LSK has emphasized the importance of upholding the highest standards of professionalism in the legal profession.
