On July 10, 2019, a disturbing trend of young Kenyan women being lured into fake marriages by foreign sex tourists emerged.
According to reports, these tourists use local young men to lure desperate girls with luxury cars and cash, taking them on expensive dates at high-end hotels in the city.
After gaining the trust of their victims, the sex predators would then marry them in ceremonies presided over by individuals masquerading as Sheikhs, often involving the victims' parents and guardians to make the wedding appear genuine.
Once married, the tourists would take advantage of their young victims before abandoning them, never to be seen or heard from again.
Before leaving, the men would promise to help their victims acquire documents to allow them entry into their countries, leaving their victims with nothing but false hope.
One such case was that of a 15-year-old Somali girl who was tricked into a fake marriage by a rich Somali national living in the US in 2018.
The girl, Jamila, was left pregnant and heartbroken when her husband disappeared after she was three months pregnant with his baby.
