On July 10, 2019, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) issued a stern warning to Kenyans regarding the unauthorized publication of photos or videos of the country's currency.
According to the CBK, taking images and videos of Kenyan money and publishing them anywhere is strictly prohibited under the Central Bank of Kenya (Currency Handling) Regulations, 2010.
“Did you know? If you would like to use images of Kenyan currency for any purpose, you MUST apply in writing to the Central Bank of Kenya for approval. CBK will consider your application and either allow it or reject it. There are penalties for contravening this,” CBK said on Twitter.
Those found guilty of violating the regulations face a hefty fine of Sh100,000 or more.
The CBK notice emphasizes that no person shall use cash or images of cash for publication or promotional purposes without prior written approval from the bank.
Applicants seeking to use images or videos of Kenyan banknotes must submit a written application, providing their full names and address, nationality, and details of the intended use, along with a specimen of the work.
CBK will review the application within 14 days and render a final decision, which will not be subject to further explanation.
