July 10, 2019, marked a significant warning to Kenyans from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK): publishing photos or videos of the country's currency without prior permission is strictly prohibited.
The CBK's warning stems from the Central Bank of Kenya (Currency Handling) Regulations, 2010, which clearly outline the consequences of flouting these regulations.
According to the notice, any individual found guilty of publishing images or videos of Kenyan currency without approval will be liable to a fine of Sh100,000 or more.
CBK emphasizes that prior written approval is required for any use of cash or images of cash, including historical ones, for publication or promotional purposes.
Applicants seeking to use images or videos of Kenyan banknotes must submit a written application to CBK, providing their full names and address, nationality, and details on the intended use of the images.
CBK will review the application within 14 days and either approve or reject it, with the decision being final and not subject to further explanation.
“Did you know? If you would like to use images of Kenyan currency for any purpose, you MUST apply in writing to the Central Bank of Kenya for approval. CBK will consider your application and either allow it or reject it. There are penalties for contravening this,” CBK said on Twitter.
