Published on January 24, 2022, investigations have been launched into the authenticity of Kitche Onyango Magak's PhD certificate, which he obtained from Washington International University (WIU).

WIU is not recognized by Kenya's Commission for University Education, and its degrees are not valid in the country.

Magak was appointed as acting Vice-Chancellor in 2019, following the departure of Prof Mary Walingo, who was fired amid corruption allegations.

However, in 2021, new complaints surfaced about Magak's qualifications, prompting an investigation into his conduct.

The Oregon Office of Degree Authorisation stated in October 2012 that WIU had not sought educational accreditation and that its degrees were not recognized.

As a result, the Education CS, Prof George Magoha, was urged to take necessary action against Magak.

Further investigation revealed that WIU was closed down by the State of Hawaii in 2015, and there is no university by that name in Hawaii or Pennsylvania.

Magak has since been replaced by Professor Joseph Chacha, who has promised to restore the university to its former glory.
