On January 23, 2022, Burkina Faso made history by becoming the first team to advance to the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals with a thrilling 7-6 victory over 10-man Gabon in a penalty shootout.
The match, held in Limbe, was an incident-packed and energy-sapping clash that saw Burkina Faso's Bertrand Traore score early in the 28th minute, only for Gabon to equalize with a late goal.
After Gabon's centre back Sidney Obissa was sent off for a second caution, Burkina Faso held their nerve in the penalty shootout, with Ismahila Ouedraogo netting the decisive kick.
The win sets up a quarter-final tie against either Nigeria or Tunisia, who meet later on Sunday.
