On January 23, 2022, the Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi witnessed a dramatic scene as the Amani National Congress (ANC) party held its National Delegates Congress (NDC). The event was attended by One Kenya Alliance (OKA) principals, including Ford Kenya's Moses Wetang'ula, and ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, who promised to make an earth-shaking declaration.
However, the presence of UDA party leaders, including Deputy President William Ruto and MPs allied to his party, marked the final nail in the coffin for OKA, which had been struggling to find its identity and pick a flagbearer for the August 9 presidential poll.
According to sources, Gideon Moi was unhappy about the situation, as he had not been informed that DP Ruto would be present at the Bomas NDC, despite being part of OKA. The first whiff of rumors about Dr. Ruto's attendance came after the three OKA leaders converged at Hemmingways, where they were to proceed to Bomas.
"The boss (Mr. Moi) contemplated not going to Bomas but we ruled against it because they wanted to hear it from Mr. Mudavadi himself," said a source within Kanu.
As a result, the group made their way to the venue and confronted the ANC, choosing to walk out after the news of the DP's arrival was confirmed. The presence of UDA MPs, including Aisha Jumwa, Benjamin Washiali, Irungu Kang'ata, Didmus Barasa, and Victor Munyaka, among others, further solidified the alliance.
The event also raised speculation about a possible deal being signed, with the presence of lawyers in full regalia suggesting that something significant might be in the works.
