On July 9, 2019, BMW's production chief Oliver Zipse revealed that the company no longer builds engines in Britain for South Africa due to the uncertainty surrounding Brexit.
Engines produced at Hams Hall, an engine facility in the UK, are currently classified as EU products. However, in the event of a no-deal Brexit, these engines would lose their EU status, and the cars they power, such as the X3, would no longer qualify for tax-free import status into Europe.
According to Zipse, Hams Hall no longer builds engines for South Africa, which is detrimental to the UK's automotive industry.
