January 19, 2022, marked a disturbing trend in Kenya, with a growing number of parents taking their lives along with those of their children. This alarming phenomenon is a stark reminder of the need to address mental health issues in our society.

Mental health is a fundamental aspect of a healthy nation, and citizens must be both mentally and physically well to raise a healthy generation. Countries affected by conflict and communities plagued by economic and social inequalities often struggle with mental health problems.

When individuals contemplate taking their own lives, it is a clear indication that they have been mentally crushed. The world appears impenetrable, with no solutions in sight. This sense of hopelessness can be overwhelming, leading people to question the meaning of life and their place in it.

Expectations set by families, friends, communities, and even strangers can contribute to the formation of a person's background and expectations. When these expectations are not met with reality, mental health problems can arise. Sour relationships, financial struggles, and excessive drinking are often cited as reasons for taking one's own life, but these are merely symptoms of deeper intrapersonal crises.

People who resort to murder-suicide often have severe ontological insecurities, and their actions are a cry for help. Poverty is increasingly becoming a factor in these tragic events. As a society, we are left with feelings of guilt and regret, wondering if we could have done something to prevent these losses.

However, there is hope. Families and friends can play a crucial role in spotting and supporting individuals struggling with mental health issues. Strong family ties can help identify and manage these problems before they escalate. Friends and accessible counseling services can also provide vital support in reducing the risk of hopelessness.

Moreover, spirituality can offer a sense of hope, even in the darkest of times. A strong faith in God can provide a foundation for dealing with overwhelming experiences and a devastating sense of helplessness. Religious institutions can play a vital role in fighting spiritual apathy and helping individuals navigate life's turbulences.

Ultimately, addressing mental health issues is crucial in preventing murder-suicides. By prioritizing mental health and providing support to those struggling, we can work towards creating a healthier and more compassionate society.

Dr. Mokua, Executive Director of the Loyola Centre for Media and Communication, emphasizes the importance of psycho-spiritual counseling in addressing mental health issues.
