Kenya's 2022 general election is fast approaching, and with it, a new crop of politicians is emerging. One of the most significant changes in this election cycle is the number of senators eyeing gubernatorial seats.
According to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, over 80 new political outfits have been officially registered and cleared for the August 2022 elections. This influx of new parties has created opportunities for senators to transition into county chief positions.
Thanks to the Kenyan Constitution of 2010, more than 20 governors will be departing from their existing positions in time for the 2022 general elections, having served two five-year terms. This retirement has opened up openings for current senators, some of whom are serving their first terms and others are spending their second terms.
Among the senators eyeing gubernatorial seats are:

- Mithika Linturi– Meru
- Margaret Kamar– Uasin Gishu
- Kithure Kindiki– Tharaka Nithi
- Mohamed Mahamud– Mandera
- Kimani Wamatangi– Kiambu
- Irungu Kangata– Muranga
- Ledama Olekina– Narok
- Charles Kibiru– Kirinyaga
- George Khaniri– Vihiga
- Sam Ongeri– Kisii
- Fred Outa– Kisumu
- Okong'o Omogeni– Nyamira
- Ochillo Ayacko– Migori
- Steward Madzayo– Kilifi
- Onesmus Kipchumba Murkomen– Elgeyo Marakwet
- James Orengo– Siaya
- Cleophas Malala– Kakamega
- Susan Kihika– Nakuru
- Johnson Sakaja– Nairobi
It is worth noting that this is not an exhaustive list, as many more candidates are anticipated to launch their candidacy for governor in the coming weeks.
