As of today, Migori Sub County is home to 18 CBC classrooms under construction, following directives from the Ministry of Education on the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) infrastructure development programme.
During an evaluation meeting held at the Deputy County Commissioner's office in Migori town, Suna East Director of Education Wilson Amollo revealed that 20 schools were awarded CBC classrooms in phase one.
However, Amollo noted that the CBC infrastructure programme had not commenced in Tingna and Kimoma secondary schools in Suna East Sub County.
The contractor for Tingna mixed secondary school pulled out due to financial challenges, while the one for Kikoma secondary school cited personal reasons.
A new contractor is being sought for Tingna Mixed Secondary school, with Amollo assuring that all CBC classrooms will be implemented within the set timeframe.
Amollo identified the supervisory stage as the biggest challenge, particularly due to transportation costs, as public work personnel are required to assess the classes at every stage to ensure they meet the required standards as per the Ministry of Education.
Migori Deputy County Commissioner Benson Karani echoed Amollo's sentiments, emphasizing the importance of public work personnel visiting the sites and ensuring measures are in place for the construction of CBC classes.
‘’Principals should be enlightened on the construction specifications in order to ensure that the classrooms are constructed according to the ministry of education plans and standards. They are our supervisors on the ground and should, therefore, be enlightened on the CBC class specifications and plans so they can help the public work personnel intervene promptly in case something goes wrong,” said Karani.
Karani assured that his committee was on course to deliver the classrooms as per the roadmap tentative date of April 1, to ensure they are handed over to the schools.
