Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers have been cracking down on wildlife crime in Taita Taveta, a region known for its vast and challenging terrain.
On Wednesday, January 5, 2022, KWS officers intercepted four suspects at Manga area in Voi sub-county with 13 sacks of sandalwood weighing 287 kilograms.
The suspects, Kasungwa Mulu, Jacob Shangala, Solomon Mwaluma, and Tangai Mwasi, were charged with illegal possession of the sandalwood and faced additional counts of possessing five pieces of elephant tusks weighing 10.6 kilograms.
Appearing before Voi Chief Magistrate Mildred Obura, the four suspects pleaded not guilty and were released on a bond of Sh100, 000 with a surety of the similar amount or a cash bail of Sh50, 000 for each count.
The case will be mentioned on January 25, 2022.
