On January 6, 2022, China and Kenya took a major step in strengthening their bilateral ties by signing six memorandums of understanding and agreements on trade, infrastructure, and other sectors.
The agreements were the result of bilateral talks between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Kenyan counterpart, Raychelle Omamo.
During a joint press conference, CS Omamo highlighted the significance of the agreements, stating that they were fundamental to the development of Kenya and characterized by a mutual desire to develop both countries.
One of the key agreements included a donation of 10,000 tonnes of rice from China to families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Additionally, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of a working group to address tariffs and non-tariff barriers between the two countries, with the aim of promoting trade and reducing the trade deficit.
China and Kenya also concluded and signed two protocols to facilitate bilateral trade, particularly on the export of avocado and aquatic products to China.
Omamo emphasized the importance of these protocols, stating that they would accelerate access to markets for these products.
The bilateral talks also covered collaboration in big data strategy, ICT, cyber, and e-government, with both countries agreeing to build capacity and technology transfer.
