January 6, 2022, marked a sobering day for Tottenham Hotspur as manager Antonio Conte reflected on their 2-0 defeat at Chelsea in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final.

Chelsea's early goal by Kai Havertz and a comical own goal by Spurs defender Ben Davies left Tottenham reeling, and while they still have a chance to turn the tie around in the second leg, Conte's words were a stark reminder of the challenge ahead.

"From the start Chelsea showed to be much better than us," Conte told Sky Sports, emphasizing the difference between the two teams.

Conte, who won the Premier League title with Chelsea in 2017 and the FA Cup a year later, acknowledged that his current team struggled to keep pace with one of the world's top teams.

"The first half we struggled a lot, but we know we are talking about one of the best teams in the world, and if you compare it to our team, there is no comparison," he said.

Conte's comments came as a reality check for Tottenham, who have not won a trophy since beating Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup final. The Italian manager's words suggest that bridging the gap between the two teams will require more than just a few January signings.
