On January 1st, 2022, a neighbour last saw Everlyn Wanjiru alive as she entered her rented one-bedroom house in Ndenderu, Kiambu County, with her boyfriend, Brian Waweru.
However, the next day, Waweru's aunt discovered the decomposing remains of Wanjiru covered with a duvet in their house. The aunt had used a spare key to enter the house, as Waweru's mother, who lives in the United States, had sent her money for Waweru's house rent and upkeep.
Waweru had taken flight, but detectives launched a manhunt for him and arrested him on Wednesday afternoon in Ndenderu area. He confessed to killing his girlfriend and led scenes of crime detectives to the spot where he had concealed the murder weapon.
Waweru had a history of violence against Wanjiru, having assaulted her in October 2021 and being arrested by detectives based at Thindigua police post. He was out on cash bail at the time of the murder.
According to Wanjiru's father, Waweru's family had approached him several times for an out-of-court settlement, but he had rejected the overtures after learning that Waweru was a serial offender with a pending defilement case.
