On January 6, 2022, Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang'i held a meeting with elders from Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums in Nairobi to discuss the recent demolitions in the area.

According to reports, the demolitions left hundreds of residents homeless after the government cleared their structures to pave way for road expansion.

The demolitions were part of a larger project to expand Catherine Ndereba Road, which will connect the Nairobi expressway with the Industrial Area and open up the slum for business.

However, the residents have condemned the demolitions, calling for the relevant authorities to intervene.

Locals claim the manner in which the demolition is being carried out is inhumane and exacerbates the plight of many, including the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
