On January 5, 2022, Kisii Woman Representative Janet Ongera issued cheques to parents and guardians at Nyabioto village in Bonchari sub-County, marking a significant step in her efforts to engage with the community.
As the ODM party begins to weigh its options for the gubernatorial race, Ongera emphasized the need for credible leadership, stating, "We need individuals who can manage and share resources across all the nine constituencies, people who have been tested," she said.
Among those who have expressed interest in the seat are Senator Sam Ongeri, Dagorreti North MP Simba Arati, Deputy Governor Joash Maangi, and CAS Chris Obure, among others.
Notably, Ongera's remarks signal a possible return to boardroom democracy, a system that was successful in the county during the 2013 and 2017 General Elections, where ODM won key seats, including the governor's seat, senator, and Woman Rep.
As the party considers its options, Deputy Party leader Wycliffe Oparanya has expressed concern over the high costs associated with nominations, stating, "The party has agreed to change the system of conducting primaries. We will not subject aspirants to nominations but either hand pick or use a delegates system to nominate the party's candidates," he said.
Speaking on the matter, Ongera named herself, Prof Ongeri, Maangi, Obure, and former MPs Manson Nyamweya and Omingo Magara as leaders who can succeed Governor James Ongwae, citing their credentials and experience.
