As the country transitions from a wet to a dry season, the Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a statement warning of dry weather conditions in January.
Published on January 6, 2022, the statement notes that most parts of the country will experience dry weather conditions from mid-January onwards.
However, the Weatherman predicts that highlands west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria basin, central and southern Rift Valley, highlands east of the Rift Valley, south-eastern lowlands, and the coastal strip will experience occasional rainfall during the first half of January.
Director of Meteorological Services Stella Aura is urging farmers in the grain basket regions to take advantage of the dry weather to dry their maize harvest and prevent contamination.
On the other hand, she warns of a potential reduction in pasture and fodder for both wildlife and livestock in the north-western and north-eastern sectors of the country, which could lead to human-wildlife conflicts and conflicts among various groups due to water and pasture shortages.
