On Wednesday, detectives arrested billionaire businesswoman Mary Wambui at her Runda home, sparking a fresh controversy surrounding her business dealings.

According to sources, Wambui was detained at the Muthaiga Police Station, where she spent the night. Her lawyers, Nelson Havi and Kipchumba Murkomen, visited her at the police post.

Wambui is set to be arraigned in court on Thursday, January 6, where she will face charges of illegal gun possession and other related offenses.

The arrest comes after Wambui surrendered her pistol on December 15, a day after the Firearms Licensing Board gave her a 24-hour ultimatum to comply with the law.

It is alleged that the pistol's license had expired on April 17, 2020, and Wambui claimed she wanted to renew it but was unable to do so due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wambui, who is also facing tax evasion charges totaling Sh2.2 billion, was released on Sh25 million cash bail on December 9.
