On January 5, 2022, a heated debate erupted in the National Assembly after Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Gedi was accused of bribing MPs to vote in favour of the handshake team.
During a vote on the Political Parties Amendment Bill 2021, Gedi was seen distributing lollipops to legislators, claiming it was to boost their sugar levels.
“Sugar levels by Hon MPs had gone down. Order Chair! I was distributing sweets,” Gedi said when challenged to state what she was distributing.
However, her explanation was met with skepticism, and she was eventually ordered out of the Assembly by temporary speaker Soipan Tuya.
Earlier, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro had accused Gedi of bribing MPs and was subsequently kicked out for two days after failing to substantiate his claims.
“Hon Nyoro, based on the standing orders 107 having misled the house. I order Hon Nyoro be removed from precincts of parliament for two days,” Tuya ruled.
