January 5, 2022, marked a significant day in the fight against drug abuse in Kenyan schools, as Rev Kenneth Wachianga of the Anglican diocese of Maseno West called for stronger anti-doping measures.

Speaking in Siaya, Rev Wachianga welcomed the efforts of Maranda high school in Bondo Sub County, which had ordered students to undergo drug tests and report back with certificates.

However, the cleric emphasized that the measures should extend to teachers and other school employees, citing the involvement of some workers and teachers in drug smuggling and the sale of outlawed products to students.

“Students cannot smuggle drugs and even inflammable products like petrol to schools without connection with school workers and even teachers,” Rev Wachianga said.

He also called on education and law enforcement officials to act decisively against teachers and workers mentioned adversely by students.

Furthermore, Rev Wachianga urged politicians to stop bullying women who declare interest in various political positions, lamenting the use of social media platforms to brand opponents negatively.
