On January 3, 2022, Patrick Mwenda, a former assistant commissioner-general of Prisons, tragically died in a private hospital in Mombasa, two days after being admitted following a bathroom fall.

Mwenda, who headed the Naivasha prison before retiring, was a key figure in introducing reforms at the facility, including an education program that has benefited over 2,000 inmates.

According to his colleague Francis Mwangi, Mwenda underwent head surgery to remove a clot after suffering a head injury in the fall.

"He was in perfect health in his Mombasa home when he fell and suffered a head injury. He, unfortunately, died a couple of days after the operation," Mwangi said.

As per Mwenda's wish, he will be cremated, and a memorial mass will be held in his hometown of Embu.
