Patrick Mwenda, a former assistant commissioner-general of Prisons, has passed away at the age of 48. He died two days after being admitted to a private hospital in Mombasa on January 3, 2022, following a fall in the bathroom.
According to reports, Mwenda was taken to the hospital on Monday, January 3, after he fell in the bathroom and sustained head injuries. He underwent surgery but unfortunately, did not recover.
During his tenure as the assistant commissioner-general of Prisons, Mwenda introduced education reforms to help inmates access learning opportunities. He also advocated for the formation of the Mindfulness Project at Naivasha Maximum Prison, which aimed to change the psyche of inmates before they reintegrated into society.
As per his wishes, Mwenda's family is making arrangements to cremate his body, a decision that reflects the growing trend of opting for cremation as an alternative to traditional burial practices in Kenya.
