On January 5, 2022, a two-week verification exercise of new recruits for the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) led to the arrest of 57 individuals found in possession of fake recruitment letters.

The military launched a recruitment drive in October 2021, and the verification exercise was conducted before the recruits were handed over to the Recruitment Training School for a six-month training.

According to the KDF, the individuals arrested were victims of conmen who had masqueraded as KDF personnel, and the military is warning the public against falling prey to recruitment scams.

The recruits, comprising General Duty officers and Tradesmen/women, were drawn from the 47 counties of Kenya.

"During the document verification exercise, 57 recruits with counterfeit calling letters were apprehended and handed over to the National Police Service for due process. KDF continues to warn the general public against falling prey to recruitment scams through fraudsters masquerading as KDF personnel," the KDF said in a statement.
