On January 4, 2022, Deputy President William Ruto emphasized that Kenya's future will not be decided in smoke-filled rooms. He stated that the next president will be elected through a free and fair election, not in a boardroom.

During his tour of Kakamega, Ruto expressed his confidence in the upcoming August elections, comparing them to the successful by-elections in Msambweni, Juja, and Kiambaa.

The Star, Kenya reported Ruto as saying, "Says Kenya's future not decided in smoke-filled rooms." He also told Mt. Kenya tycoons that they are useless, and it is the Kenyan people who will decide the country's future.
