On January 4, 2022, a devastating road accident occurred on the Embu-Karitiri highway, claiming the lives of four people, including a mother and her two children.
The incident happened when a motorcycle collided head-on with a personal vehicle at Matakari, with the motorcycle rider attempting to overtake a vehicle and ramming into an oncoming one on the opposite lane.
According to police reports, the bodies of the deceased were moved to the Embu Level Five hospital mortuary.
Just hours before the accident, the government had urged road users to observe discipline as schools re-opened, with Government Spokesperson Col. (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna stating, "As schools re-open this week, we appeal to all drivers of both public and private vehicles to adhere to traffic rules and regulations. Drive responsibly, and let us get all our children to schools safely."

Since the beginning of the year, numerous lives have been lost in road carnages, with the most recent incident occurring on January 2, 2022, when eight passengers lost their lives after a passenger service vehicle (PSV) they were traveling in rammed into a stationary lorry at Musembere area along the Eldoret - Webuye highway.
