On a chilly Tuesday afternoon, January 4, 2022, KCB secured a crucial 1-0 win over Mathare United at the Kasarani Annex, catapulting them to the top of the FKF Premier League standings.
With the victory, KCB accumulated 25 points, matching Kakamega Homeboyz's tally, who suffered a 1-0 home loss against FC Talanta.
Bandari moved to third place after a late goal secured a 1-0 win over Sofapaka in Wundanyi, while Kariobangi Sharks and Kenya Police FC also secured victories against Ulinzi Stars and Vihiga Bullets, respectively.
At the Kasarani Annex, Mathare United had the best chances of the game, but ultimately failed to capitalize on their opportunities.
Four minutes before halftime, Mathare's Eugene Wethuli broke through KCB's offside trap, but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Gabriel Andika.
The bankers also had chances to score, with David Owino missing a clear opportunity after 18 minutes and Michael Mutinda's low shot being turned away for a corner by keeper Bryne Omondi.
Mathare's Kennedy Ochieng had a chance to equalize in the 28th minute, but his freekick effort sailed over the wall and wide.
It wasn't until the 74th minute that KCB broke the deadlock, with Derrick Otanga reacting quickest to James Mazembe's saved shot.
Mazembe's introduction had sparked an attacking difference for KCB, and his shot had put Otanga through just a minute before the goal.
