On January 3, 2022, a grandmother was brought before Kabarnet Law Court, accused of murdering her 10-day-old granddaughter.

According to reports, the grandmother, Cheparsip Kunia, had been caring for her daughter, who had given birth at Baringo Referral Hospital, but was frustrated by the prolonged stay due to birth complications.

On New Year's Day, Kunia allegedly became enraged and killed the infant by smashing her three times on the floor.

James Muchiri, an officer from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation, presented a miscellaneous application seeking to hold the accused for 14 days to complete investigations.

Resident Magistrate Vienna Amboko granted the application, ordering the accused to be detained at Kabarnet police station for 14 days to allow completion of the investigation and an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The magistrate also ordered the accused to undergo a mental assessment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.

The case will come up for mention on January 17, 2022, where the accused is expected to take a plea.
