Kenyan Elephant's Food Preservation Skills Go Viral Internationally

On January 2, a video posted by Sheldrick Trust went viral on social media, showcasing a young Kenyan elephant named Latika demonstrating rare food preservation skills.

According to the wildlife trust, Latika occasionally uses the skill to save food for future meals. The video caption explained that the elephant adapted this skill after being separated from her family.

Sheldrick Wildlife Trust revealed that Latika is an orphan who was rescued in October 2021 after being left behind by her herd during the dry season. The trust explained that the calf was rescued with a snare slicing into her neck and was later put up for adoption.

Individuals interested in adopting Latika will pay Ksh5,659 per year. The trust named her Latika after the area near where she was rescued and expressed gratitude for the international attention the video received.

After the video was posted, various international media outlets picked up the story, and online users across the world took to social media to marvel at the elephant's rare skill, stating that she would be adopted quicker than expected.
