On July 9, 2019, the Kenyan government declared the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) offices countrywide as protected areas, effectively restricting access to unauthorized individuals.

According to a gazette notice issued by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, the KRA offices are now subject to the Protected Areas Order, which prohibits unauthorized persons from entering the premises without permission.

Those found loitering or trespassing in the KRA offices risk being jailed for two years, fined KSh 5,000, or both if convicted. The penalty doubles to KSh 10,000 and a five-year jail term for those found trespassing while in possession of firearms, ammunition, or explosives.

Additionally, individuals are prohibited from taking photos, drawing sketches, or obtaining records or transit information about the KRA premises without permission.

The KRA offices join a list of other protected areas in the country, including the Central Bank of Kenya, State House, military barracks, and foreign embassies.
