On January 1, 2022, Haiti marked its 218th anniversary of independence, but the celebration turned into a scene of chaos when armed men attempted to assassinate Prime Minister Ariel Henry in Gonaïves.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister's office, the attack occurred at a church in the northern city of Gonaïves, where Mr. Henry was attending a ceremony commemorating the country's independence.
Video footage shared on social media showed the Prime Minister and his entourage rushing towards their vehicles as the armed group began shooting outside the cathedral.
The police were unable to immediately confirm casualties, but Haitian media reported that the shooting killed one person and injured two others.
