January 3, 2022 - Kenya's COVID-19 positivity rate has surged to 30.6%, with a significant increase in new cases reported over the past 24 hours.
According to Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, the country has recorded 1,223 positive cases from a sample size of 4,003 tested since Sunday.
Of the new cases, 1,132 are Kenyans, while 91 are foreigners.
Unfortunately, 10 people have succumbed to the disease, bringing the cumulative fatalities to 5,394.
Currently, 1,089 patients are admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 24,349 are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program.
Regarding vaccination efforts, Kagwe reported that 10,134,012 vaccines had been administered across the country by January 3, with 4,222,839 individuals fully vaccinated.
The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose was at 55.8%, and the proportion of adults fully vaccinated was 15.5%, according to Kagwe.
Additionally, the ministry has administered 21,130 doses to those between 15 to 18 years and 13,218 booster doses.
The government aims to vaccinate a targeted population of 27,246,033 and has directed hotels, restaurants, bars, and malls to restrict admission to unvaccinated people to achieve herd immunity.
Furthermore, the Health Ministry has started administering booster jabs across the country.
