On January 3, 2022, the Kenya national Chess calendar for the year 2021 came to a close with the federation hosting a total of 211 players at the national championship held at Luke Hotel in Nairobi.

Martin Njoroge triumphed in the men's open category after defeating defending champion Gohil Mehul in a thrilling playoff. The two players faced off in a two-match tiebreaker, with each match lasting 15 minutes. However, the matches ended in a 1-1 draw, forcing the competition to proceed to a blitz match of 5 minutes each. Martin won both matches to be declared the new national champion for 2021.

In the ladies' category, Women Fide Master Sasha Mongeli proved her mettle against Triza Mwendwa, winning in two straight games to be declared the winner amongst ladies.

As part of the championship's prize, Martin Njoroge was awarded a car by Chess Kenya President Bernard Wanjala during a ceremony held at Luke Hotel in Nairobi.
