Published on January 3, 2022, the Isiolo Elders Council has announced that all candidates from the Somali community in Isiolo County will be screened before being cleared to run for various political positions.
The council's chairman, Shariff Abdullahi, explained that each candidate will be vetted by a group of 10 elders from the community who will cast secret ballots.
Abdullahi emphasized that only candidates who understand the importance of secret ballots in selecting leaders will be supported by the community during the elections.
The council, which is made up of 30 elders representing each of the 10 clans in the community, aims to ensure that only the most suitable candidates are selected to represent the community in the upcoming elections.
“Any leader who wants to be elected must understand that secret ballots are the only way to select leaders, including deputy governors,” Abdullahi said during the screening process for candidates in the Burat and Bulapesa areas.
Two candidates, Mohammed Barre Ahmed and Ismail Jama Sufi, have been cleared to run for the MCA positions in the Burat and Bulapesa areas.
