On January 2, 2022, Sudan's Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok announced his resignation in a speech on state broadcaster, citing the country's descent into disaster.

Hamdok, who accepted the post of Prime Minister in August 2019, acknowledged that the transitional government faced enormous challenges, including a distorted national economy, international isolation, corruption, and debts exceeding $60 billion.

He emphasized that the government's approach has always been dialogue and consensus building, but the accelerated pace of divergence and division between the civilian and military components affected the performance and effectiveness of the state.

Hamdok indicated that he had met with all components of the transitional period, considering the nation's major problem to be a structural one between its civil and military components.

He stressed that his acceptance of the assignment came as a result of the political consensus, but the conflict between the two ruling partners was reflected in the performance and effectiveness of the state at various levels.

Hamdok concluded by saying, "I have decided to return your trust to you and announce to you my resignation from the position of Prime Minister, to make way for another of the daughters or sons of this generous country."
