On January 1, 1977, the East African Community (EAC) collapsed, marking a significant blow to regional integration in East Africa. The collapse was a result of disagreements between member states, including Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Former Minister Njonjo's champagne toast sparked controversy, with many questioning his motives. In a statement, Njonjo felt that Tanzania and Uganda took advantage of Kenya in the cooperation.
