January 1, 2022, marked a significant day in Kenya's political landscape as Gatundu South Member of Parliament (MP) Moses Kuria proposed a novel idea - sharing power between Deputy President William Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga.

From his hospital bed in Dubai, where he is undergoing specialized treatment for burns caused by an electric blanket, Kuria outlined his vision for a smoother transition of power after the 2022 General Elections.

According to Kuria, the current 50 percent plus one threshold for presidential candidates should be increased to over 60 percent of the total votes. If a candidate fails to meet this threshold, they would be required to form a government of national unity for five years.

“If you do not garner 60 percent or more of the presidential vote, you have to form a government of national unity for five years,” Kuria stated.

He emphasized that his proposal aims to ensure a peaceful transition of power from President Uhuru Kenyatta's government to the new administration.

“This will bring Kenya together and safeguard the country for future generations,” Kuria stated.

His warning to presidential hopefuls was clear: “I fear for our beloved country Kenya. If you want to form a government by yourself, please be ready to garner more than 60 percent.”

Infotrak's recent poll, released on December 27, 2021, highlighted a closely contested race between Raila Odinga and DP Ruto, with the former leading at 33 percent and the latter at 32 percent.
