Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a prominent anti-apartheid campaigner, will be remembered in a unique way – through a process called aquamation, which uses water instead of fire.

According to Very Rev Michael Weeder, aquamation was 'what he aspired to as an eco-warrior.'

Thousands of South Africans have paid their respects to Tutu at St George's Cathedral in Cape Town, where his body has been lying in state since his death a week ago.

One man, Wally Mdluli, traveled over 1,000km from Bloemfontein to Cape Town to pay his respects, enlisting the help of family and friends to cover some of the costs.

His ashes will be interred behind the pulpit at St George's Cathedral, where Tutu served as Archbishop for 35 years.

What is aquamation? It's a process that uses water, touted as a greener alternative to cremation, which produces up to 90% less environmentally harmful carbon dioxide.
