On December 31, 2021, a rally was held at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, Western Kenya, where leaders from the region endorsed Raila Odinga as their preferred candidate for the 2022 presidential election.
The endorsement was made by the Luhya community through their elders, who read a declaration containing five key resolutions in the presence of Odinga and other political leaders from the region.
The declaration stated that the region shall be part and parcel of Azimio la Umoja under the leadership of Raila Odinga and that the community will only vote for candidates in all other positions allied and members of Azimio.
Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa described Raila as the safest bet, saying he was the only leader who could be trusted with the country's political and economic future.
Other leaders at the convention, including Amani National Congress (ANC) deputy party leader Ayub Savula, joined forces with Raila after ditching One Kenya Alliance (OKA).
Raila welcomed a number of defectors and pledged to create jobs and boost the region's economy by reviving collapsed companies such as the Mumias sugar company.
