December 31, 2022, marked a significant day for the Luhya community as Governor Wycliffe Oparanya was appointed as their new spokesperson. This decision was made by the Elders of Western Region in a meeting held at Bukhungu grounds in Kakamega.

According to a statement released by the Elders, Governor Oparanya was chosen to represent the interests of the Luhya community in the national government. The statement read, 'The Elders of Western Region have appointed Governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya as the leader of the Luhya community to represent our interests in the government you will form in 2022.'

Notably, Musalia Mudavadi, the former spokesperson for the Luhya community, was present at the meeting but declined to attend. He has held the position since 2016 and was reappointed in 2016 at the same Bukhungu grounds.

Interestingly, the meeting was also attended by Moses Wetang'ula, the leader of Ford Kenya, who, like Musalia Mudavadi, declined to attend the meeting. The event was organized by Francis Atwoli, the Secretary-General of COTU.
