Following the chaos that marred the December 29, 2021, sitting, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has rescheduled special sittings to complete the contentious Political Parties Amendment Bill.

According to a statement published in local newspapers on December 31, 2021, Muturi announced that the special sittings will take place on January 5, 6, and 7, 2022, from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm.

During the special sittings, the National Assembly will focus on the contentious Political Parties Amendment Bill and other pending matters.

Speaker Muturi has directed the Clerk of the National Assembly, Michael Sialai, to ensure that the electronic voting system is functioning properly to facilitate the special sittings.

Additionally, Muturi has instructed the Clerk to ensure that Members of Parliament who have lost their electronic voting cards can collect new ones from the Sergeant-at-Arms' office by 5:00 pm on January 4, 2022.

The special sittings were necessitated by the chaos that erupted during the December 29, 2021, sitting, which was marred by violence and clashes between opposing factions.

During the sitting, the Majority Leader, Amos Kimunya, confirmed that he had written to Speaker Muturi to request the rescheduling of the special sittings.

Kimunya, who is the Member of Parliament for Kipipiri, stated that he had written to Muturi to request the rescheduling of the special sittings to complete the contentious bill.

The chaos that erupted during the sitting was sparked by a motion moved by the Member of Parliament for Kandara, Alice Wahome, who sought to delete Section 6 of the bill, which proposes the creation of merged parties.

The motion was defeated by 158 votes to 134, with the Majority and ODM factions voting against it.
