December 31, 2021 - The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is facing a daunting task in recruiting and retaining teachers due to a severe shortage in the sector. According to TSC Chair Dr. Jamleck Muturi John, approximately 25,000 teachers are expected to retire within the next two years, exacerbating the current shortage.
Dr. Muturi emphasized the need for the government to provide additional funding to employ more teachers. He stated that the commission is seeking funds from the National Treasury to employ 5,000 teachers annually to address the crisis.
However, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called for the resumption of talks on teachers' pay hike, citing the need for improved remuneration to attract and retain qualified educators.
