On December 30, 2021, the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) made a significant move by lowering the mobile termination rates (MTR) and Fixed termination rate (FTR) from Sh0.99 to Sh0.12, effective from January 1, 2022.
Airtel Kenya has welcomed this decision, stating that it will greatly benefit the Kenyan consumer and enable easier communication across networks.
"Interconnection enables customers to seamlessly call each other across networks. Without interconnection, users would be forced to obtain mobile or fixed numbers from one network," Airtel noted in a statement.
The reduction in rates is expected to increase mobile penetration in Kenya and enhance access to voice and data services, supporting the Government's broadband strategy and positioning Kenya as a regional ICT Hub.
According to Airtel, customers will also benefit from better services as telcos will now have more money to invest in their infrastructure and networks, rather than using it to pay high interconnection fees.
