Published on July 8, 2019, Arsenal are on the verge of finalizing a deal for highly-rated Saint Etienne defender William Saliba.

The 18-year-old French wonderkid has been touted as an exciting prospect in Europe, and Arsenal are willing to pay a fee of around £25million to secure his services.

However, Saint Etienne are keen to keep Saliba for one more season, with the club president confirming that the defender himself wants to stay longer.

"He will stay at the club this season. It is an imperative condition should we come to an agreement for his transfer. It’s also William’s wish," Saint Etienne president Romeyer was quoted in France as saying.

As a result, Arsenal may be forced to make a small payment this summer and have Saliba complete his switch to the Emirates next year.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery would prefer Saliba to be available now, but is willing to wait and have him join the team later.

Saliba has already made a name for himself in Ligue 1, making 16 appearances for Saint Etienne last season, and has also represented the France Under-20 team.
