With COVID-19 infections surging in Kenya, health officials are urging citizens to remain vigilant during the Christmas and New Year festivities.

According to the Ministry of Health, the country had recorded 281,358 infections and 5,359 deaths by Christmas day, with 9,534,806 vaccines administered and 3,916,511 people fully inoculated.

Despite the progress made in vaccination efforts, Provost Sammy Wainaina of All Saints Cathedral warned that vaccination does not warrant recklessness when it comes to observing safety measures.

'We are now talking of 32.7 percent positivity rate, that is very high,' Wainaina said. 'When we were getting to 12 percent we used to be very worried. But the way Kenyans are behaving is like 32 percent is not scary.'

Wainaina noted that cases of new infections and re-infections have been recorded even for those who have already taken the jab, and urged people to be careful, especially those traveling to visit elderly parents.
