On December 27, 2021, Telkom Kenya welcomed the Communication Authority of Kenya's review of mobile termination rates (MTRs) and fixed termination rates (FTRs) from KES 0.99 to KES 0.12.

The company sees this review as a timely and progressive step towards making voice services more affordable and accessible to more Kenyans.

According to Telkom, voice, data, and financial services have become daily necessities, especially during the pandemic, which has led to a heavier reliance on remote work, online communications, entertainment, and virtual transactions.

However, Telkom notes that globally, dominant players in mobile telephony markets have a pricing advantage due to the imbalance of connecting traffic between themselves and other network operators.

This imbalance could lead to the creation of a 'club effect' where customers of larger operators are offered attractive price incentives to stay on the network, stifling competition and denying customers of choice.

At Telkom, we hold firm the conviction that access to Mobile Voice and Data services is a fundamental human right, said the company in a statement.

As part of its efforts to make mobile services more accessible, Telkom has developed new and competitively priced products and solutions, such as Madaraka Life, and is investing in its digital financial service T-kash and network infrastructure.
