Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore's Firing Alleged by Miguna Miguna ¶
Published on November 7, 2017
Miguna Miguna, a former aide to Raila Odinga and a Canadian-based Kenyan lawyer, alleged that Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore was fired on November 7, 2017. Miguna made the claim on the People and Politics segment of NTV's AM Live morning talk show.
According to Miguna, Collymore was sacked due to the opposition coalition's offensive on the telecommunications company, advising its massive supporters to boycott Safaricom's products and services. The opposition coalition, led by Raila Odinga and Musalia Mudavadi, had accused Safaricom of colluding with the Jubilee party and the electoral commission to provide cover for rigging the August elections.
However, Safaricom's Chairman, Nicholas Ng'ang'a, had previously stated that Collymore had taken leave to receive specialized treatment for a number of months. Miguna dismissed this as a cover story to 'soften' the landing and save the company from further turmoil.
Some insider information had previously revealed that the Safaricom boss was fired due to issues of the telecommunication company having a hand in assassinations and unethical practices, including corruption in procurement.
On the other hand, Safaricom has denied the allegations, stating that it had transmitted results from polling stations directly to a cloud server registered in Spain, as per its contract. The company has also denied any involvement in the bungling of the August 8 polls.
