Covid-19 Cases Surge in Kenya, Quarantine Numbers Rise

As of Boxing Day, Kenya has recorded 282,554 confirmed Covid-19 cases, with a positivity rate of 35.0%.

According to Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, the country has seen a surge in new cases, with 1,196 people testing positive from a sample size of 3,415 tested in the last 24 hours.

Of the new cases, 1,037 are Kenyans, while 159 are foreigners. The youngest case is a one-year-old child, while the oldest is a 93-year-old.

The Ministry of Health has reported that a total of 18,696 individuals are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program, with 704 admitted to various health facilities countrywide due to Covid-19.

Of those in health facilities, 18 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with 12 on ventilatory support and 6 on supplemental oxygen. Another 139 patients are on supplemental oxygen, and 133 are in the general wards.

Two patients have succumbed to the disease, bringing the cumulative fatalities to 5,361.

The Ministry has noted that Nairobi County is leading with 408 new cases confirmed, followed by Mombasa with 116, Siaya with 76, Uasin Gishu with 63, and Kisumu with 61 new cases.
