On July 8, 2019, Nyeri County unveiled two new fire engines at Whispers Park in Nyeri, acquired at a cost of Sh100 million.
According to Governor Mutahi Kahiga, the new equipment will bring the number of working fire engines in the county to four, greatly helping to mitigate against frequent sporadic fires.
The county boss emphasized the importance of proper maintenance and operation of the fire engines, urging the drivers to be extra careful and maintain the engines as if they were their own.
He also announced the employment of 11 trained and qualified personnel to ensure the new fire engines are operated diligently.
The acquisition of the new fire engines comes after a fire engine lost control and killed two people at Thunguma area in September 2015.
Deputy Governor Caroline Karugu urged the drivers of the fire engines to avoid going to work while drunk, citing an accident in 2015 that killed two people.
Nyeri County Commissioner Yatich Kipkemei called on the county government to set up a department to handle emergency issues, allocating police officers to the department to ensure law and order.
