On December 25, 2021, hundreds of mourners gathered in Ikinu village, Kiambu County, to bid farewell to Karen Mburu, one of the four Chogoria Girls High School students killed in a road accident last week.
Ms. Mburu's parents, James Mburu and Lucy Ndung'u, were visibly heartbroken throughout the emotional ceremony.
Her father, Mr. Mburu, eulogized his daughter, saying she was hardworking and had aspirations to become a doctor.
“I can’t forget the charming smile and hugs during parents’ days,” Mr. Mburu said in his tribute.
He recalled that Karen had been doing well in academics and had high expectations for her future.
“You were aspiring to be a doctor and we were looking forward to having one in our family,” Mr. Mburu said.
He also shared how he rushed to the scene of the accident on Kenol-Sagana road, but found his daughter dead.
“Darkness engulfed my soul. I couldn’t believe you were gone… my heart sank to the lowest depth,” he said.
Ms. Ndung'u also expressed her grief, saying, “My family chain is broken and nothing seems the same… but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.”
Karen was 18 years old and was set to sit for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exam in March next year.
